This year we are thrilled to welcome a cohort of young adults to Evergreen Roadworks™ for the summer. Starting May 13, a crew of interns joined us, just in time for our busiest season as an asphalt pavement preservation contractor.
The presence of our interns epitomizes reciprocity. As Evergreen Roadworks continues to grow, we need hardworking individuals to support our efforts. At the University of Illinois (U of I) career fair, we offered the chance to learn real-life job skills and maneuver behind-the-scenes in an essential industry. In turn, our interns have brought new ideas, fresh perspectives and an encouraging can-do attitude.
Daniel Dahan graduated from U of I this spring majoring in advertising with a minor in philosophy. With a plan to work in advertising and business strategy, he joined our internal communications team. “When I met the team at U of I’s career fair, Evergreen’s approach was a breath of fresh air: straightforward, honest and hardworking,” says Daniel. “Working here is always exciting.”
Idunnoluwa (Idunnu) Akinola, studying accounting and data science at U of I, supports our accounting team. On a journey to explore technology career paths, she has enjoyed learning about the inner workings of the road construction business. Idunnu remarks, “I’ve realized how much people really need these services.”
After studying computer science and engineering as an undergraduate, Kushagra Suryawanshi is pursuing his Master of Science in Information Managment at U of I. His goal: “I want to become a strategic data consultant and help businesses grow with data-driven decisions.” At Evergreen, he is already bringing this vision to life by migrating data into Power BI reports to visualize and analyze jobs more efficiently.

For one of our interns, Evergreen’s office was already a familiar place. Lily Summers is following in her family’s footsteps, eager to learn all she can about the road construction industry. This summer, she is supporting essential invoices and documentation to keep the people in the field moving. Starting in the fall, Lily will head off to college with plans to study radiology. She believes her experience as an Evergreen summer intern is preparing her for the fast-paced world of medicine.
We are proud of the presence of families within Evergreen. Our culture is built on long-term relationships and mutual trust. In fact, a number of our full-time employees began as interns. Rachel Mathine, Meghan Uppinghouse and Catherine Nickrent were all hooked by their summer experiences as interns.
By inviting interns into our inner operations, we get to learn and grow together. At Evergreen, we are passionate about building stronger roads and stronger communities, which is why we love sharing the complexities of our industry with new minds. Likewise, Evergreen is aided by novel perspectives and talent from the next generation.
Our President Joe Lamb says it best, “At the end of the summer, I hope our interns feel known by each person at our office and also gain a solid grasp of our industry.”
Thank you, Daniel, Indunnu, Kushagra and Lily for the time and skills you share with us. Happy National Intern Day!
